Developmental Experiences

Qualified, permanent employees can access internal and external career development opportunities to expand their career while at the FBI.

Examples

  • Temporary duty (TDY) assignments offer current, permanent employees the opportunity to broaden their experience while serving in a temporary assignment at another division, section, or unit, even virtually. TDYs generally range from 30 days to 12 months. Assignments are open to all qualified, permanent employees who meet program qualifications. Visit HRLink Topics to learn more or HRLink Careers to view open TDY postings.
  • External development opportunities (EDOs) offer leadership training for eligible current, permanent employees through war college partnerships, interagency programs, and approved academic institutions. Talk to your supervisor or reach out to the Leadership Development Unit to learn more.
  • Joint Duty assignments (JDAs) are the temporary detail or assignment of personnel to a position in another agency or relevant organization that provides substantive professional, technical, or leadership experience that includes policy, program, managerial, analytical, or operational responsibility for intelligence resources, programs, policies, analysis, or operations. JDAs are lateral assignments only and are generally one to three years in length. Visit HRLink Topics to learn more or find the most recent vacancies on the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) website.

Legat Program

The legal attaché—commonly known as legats—program is a unique, highly competitive job experience not found in a domestic assignment. A legat assignment is richly rewarding but demanding. As the face of the FBI abroad, legat personnel serve as the foundation of our international law enforcement, intelligence, and national security initiatives and are expected to perform both mandatory domestic duties and their legat role.
